Fitness Gimmicks

It is shopping season, Christmas is coming up and the infomercials are in high gear trying to sell you anything and everything. Fitness gadgets are no exception. There are hundreds of them out there. From the Ab Lounge®, to the Perfect Push-up, to the Fluidity Bar®, the list is seemingly endless. The models are all in incredible shape. They give the impression, but are usually careful not to directly say, that they got that way using the equipment they are hawking.

I feel fairly confident in saying that none of those models got the look they have using affordable, portable in-home equipment. They got that way after spending many years working very hard, and frequently there is a little Photoshop involved too. If you want to look like a fitness model you have a lot of hard work ahead of you. There are no shortcuts.

Even if your goal is just to loose a few pounds and live healthier, most of these gimmick fitness gadgets will reduce your bank account much more than your body fat percentage. For example, the Ab Lounge® claims “testing proves the Ab Lounge 2 is more effective than standard bent knee crunches.” For just $100 you can own this future coat rack. If you want effective abdominal exercises, ask one of the trainers at your gym. If you don’t belong to a gym, there are dozens of books that will give you 30 or 40 good abdominal exercises that you can do at home and will add variety to your workout routine. In addition, any single exercise, no matter how good, is not enough. In order to exercise properly, you need to change your exercises periodically or your muscles stop adapting.

The Perfect Push-up up is another example of a fitness gimmick that attempts to mislead you into buying something you don’t need. They claim that you will get “ripped abs, a chiseled chest and rock hard biceps and triceps.” If you follow a comprehensive fitness plan using a variety of exercises that target each of those muscle groups and lower your body fat then you will most likely get what they claim. The chances of getting those results with just the Perfect Push-up are pretty slim. Now, a push up is a great exercise and the perfect push up is a great way to change up your routine. However, for the money that you would spend on the Perfect Push-up you could buy yourself some much more versatile equipment such as a set of dumbbells. Instead, use the floor, or a chair, or a table for your push-ups.

If you want to spend money on your fitness this year, go join a gym, hire a personal trainer for a few sessions, or invest in a good pair of exercise shoes. Don’t spend it on some gimmick that will most likely begin gathering dust before the New Year is even a month old.

Ken,
I enjoyed your article. It made me smile to think about how so many infomercials about fitness gimmicks are shown in the middle of the night. I know that when I am working out regularly I sleep so much better. Perhaps the key to saving money here is to sleep through all the infomercials by having a good workout the day before!

Dear Ken, I had to laugh out loud at your “future coat rack” comment! I have quite a collection of those! Every cardio-ab-fat busting- budget thrashing machine on the market is in either my reck-room or my garage. My teenagers often lose interest in them before the are fully assembled! I Stick to my 8 pound barbells, a figure eight stretchy rubberband-like device and my favorite is the carpeted floor of my livingroom where I do many bending stretching exercises with nothing but music to accompany my moans and groans. Much cheaper, and simple too.
